LA County Sheriff’s Dept Increases Security, Efficiency, and Accessibility of Inmate Visitation

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Inmate Video Visitation Kiosk

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Renovo Software have partnered to improve the inmate visitation process at the LA County Jail complex, the largest jail system in the nation. LA County Sheriff's Department's Custody Division has an average daily inmate population of over 18,000 inmates and now schedules about 20,000 visits per month with Renovo's visitation management system. Over 134,000 registered visitors are using the system's scheduling software which allows visitors to register and schedule visits online at or via on-site touchscreen kiosks.

This advanced system offers inmates a way to connect better with their families and provides an improved visiting environment.

In phase one of implementation, LASD began using the online visitor scheduling and registration system. Thirty video visitation units have been installed in select inmate housing units at each of their facilities (Twin Towers Custody Facility, Men’s Central Jail, Century Regional Detention Facility, Pitchess Detention Center, Los Angeles County Medical Center, Lakewood Station and San Dimas Station) with plans to add more. In addition, five scheduling kiosks are located in key locations.

Visitors previously had to wait in long lines for hours for a first-come-first-served scheduling process without knowing if a visit would be available. Visits scheduled online are confirmed immediately via email, and if the inmate is moved, released, or restricted, the visitor is notified by email and phone. Long lines and unpredictability have been greatly reduced, making inmate visitation more efficient while also making the process much more convenient and accessible for visitors.

Phase two and three will include installation of video visitation units at each custody facility and sheriff's station for both personal and professional visits, and ultimately, visitors will be allowed to choose on-site video visitation or remote visitation through their personal computer, smart phone, or tablet.
